History

The Department of Urban and Regional Planning was established in August 2013 with the Departments of Architecture, Estate Management, Quantity Surveying, and Surveying and Geo-informatics. These five departments form the Faculty of Environmental Sciences at the University of Ilorin. The department offers a five-year Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) degree programme. Prof. Nurain Bolanle Tanimowo, a visiting professor from Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) in Ogbomoso, Oyo State, played a crucial role in developing the department’s esteemed reputation as the pioneer Dean of the Faculty. In the 2013/2014 session, Dr. Maimuna Orire Abdulraheem was the pioneer coordinator when the department began its full academic activities.
During its initial year, the department started with five academic staff members and one technical staff member. This team comprised a Visiting Professor, one Lecturer I, two Lecturer II, one Assistant Lecturer, and one technical staff member. The department has experienced significant growth in academic and technical staff in recent years. As of the commencement of the 2021/2022 academic session, the department is serviced by nine full-time academic staff members, one professor on sabbatical, four adjunct lecturers, and two technical staff members.
When the department was established, the B.Sc. Urban and Regional Planning programme commenced with 25 students. Over time, the student population has increased. In October 2018, the department celebrated the graduation of twenty-three students from its first batch. Currently, one hundred and thirty-three (133) students are enrolled at various levels of the academic programme at the undergraduate level. The 2022/2023 academic session has also marked the commencement of postgraduate programmes in the department. The Postgraduate Diploma (PGD), Master’s degree (M.Sc.) and Doctorate Degree (PhD) programmes have all been advertised.
